Gemona del Friuli is a comune situated in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine within the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It lies approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Trieste and 25 kilometres northwest of Udine. The town occupies a commanding position where the Tagliamento river breaks through the southern edge of the Alps into the Adriatic basin, marking a key point on the historical road connecting Italy to Austria.
