Hakodate is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, serving as the capital of that subprefecture. Situated on the south coast of the Kameda Peninsula, it overlooks the Tsugaru Strait which separates it from Honshu. The city sits on a tombolo, a sandbar connecting the former island of Mount Hakodate to the main island, with its central area positioned directly on this landform.
