Toyama serves as the capital city of Toyama Prefecture in Japan, situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan within the Chūbu region of central Honshū. It lies approximately 200 kilometers north of Nagoya and 300 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. The city occupies a strategic position in the middle of its prefecture, bordered by Gifu Prefecture and neighboring municipalities such as Imizu, Namerikawa, Tonami, Nanto, Hida, and Takayama.
The area was historically part of ancient Etchū Province and served as a traffic hub since prehistoric times. During the Sengoku period, warlord Sassa Narimasa built Toyama Castle and developed agriculture. Under the Maeda clan in the Edo period, it became known as the province of medicine due to Chinese medicine and washi paper production. The modern city was established on April 1, 1889, and expanded significantly through mergers in 2005.
The municipal territory covers 1,241.77 square kilometers, featuring the fertile Toyama Plain and coastal areas. Notable landmarks include Toyama Castle ruins, the Kurobe Dam, and the Kitadai Jomon period site. The city has been designated an environmental model city for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its industrial heritage includes aluminum and ball-bearing production, with surviving war-related factories located just outside the urban center.
Cultural attractions include the Botanic Gardens of Toyama, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Toyama Glass Art Museum. The annual Toyama Chindon Contest features bands of sandwichmen, while Kaze No Bon is held in September. The city hosts the Toyama Athletic Recreation Park Stadium, home to Kataller Toyama. Educational institutions include the University of Toyama and several national colleges, supporting a vibrant academic community.
As of 2021, the population was 413,028, with earlier estimates from 2019 citing 415,844 residents. The economy features Hokuriku Electric Power Company and Nachi-Fujikoshi headquarters. Transport includes Toyama Airport with international flights and the Hokuriku Shinkansen connecting to Tokyo and Osaka.
