Fuxing District is a mountain indigenous district located in eastern Taoyuan City, Taiwan. It serves as the largest district in Taoyuan by area, covering 350.78 square kilometers. The region is characterized by its rugged terrain and significant elevation, featuring numerous mountains exceeding 1,500 meters. Its geographical position places it within a prominent natural landscape that defines its administrative and ecological identity.
During the period of Japanese rule, the area was classified as Aboriginal Land. In August 2015, the Heliu community experienced a devastating landslide triggered by Typhoon Soudelor, which completely buried the settlement. Historically, it was known as Fuxing Township before its current administrative status. These events highlight the district's complex history and the challenges faced by its residents over time.
The district is home to the Atayal people, who form the main population group. Notable geographical features include Lala Mountain and the Shimen Reservoir, which was formed by the Shimen Dam. The area contains several mountains over 1,500 meters, such as Lalashan at 2,030 meters and Yufengshan at 2,300 meters. These natural landmarks define the physical character of the region.
Visitor appeal is driven by tourist attractions like the Baleng Tower, Chatianshan Nature Reserve, and Dongyanshan Forest Recreation Area. The Northern Cross-Island Highway offers extensive hiking trails connecting sites such as Sanmin Bat Cave and Xiao Wulai Waterfall. River tracing activities are available on the Yunei, Xibuqiao, Sanguang, and Taman Rivers, providing outdoor recreational opportunities for visitors.
The population was recorded at 13,252 as of 2026. Transportation is facilitated by Zhongli Bus Co. and Taoyuan Bus Co., with services running from Taoyuan Station to Linbankou. The district includes administrative divisions such as Gaoyi, Hualing, and Luofu villages. Access to the area allows visitors to explore its diverse natural reserves and historical sites throughout the year.
