Mission Area LERI - February 24th 2026
On February 24, 2026, at around 10:20 p.m., Mission Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call for an “Attempt Suicide, Subject Armed with a Gun.” The officers located the suspect, later identified as 63-year-old George Barragan, standing in an alley to the rear of the location. Barragan was holding a large knife and refused to drop the weapon. The officers verbalized with Barragan for over 40 minutes when he began walking toward the officers still holding the knife. An officer discharged a round from a 40mm Less Lethal Launcher (LLL) at Barragan and a Law Enforcement Related Injury (LERI) occurred. Barragan went to the ground, but he maintained proximity to the knife, which he later picked up and continued to hold. The officers continued to verbalize with Barragan for an additional 80 minutes before he was able to be taken into custody without further incident. The Los Angeles Fire Department transported Barragan to a local hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. Barragan was admitted into the hospital for an injury to his groin. No other community members or officers were injured as a result of this incident. Force Investigation Division (FID) personnel responded and assumed investigative responsibility.

Its urban core features Frank Gehry's architectural showcase and hosts the oldest Roman Catholic archdiocese in the United States. The historic center commemorates the original pueblo at Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza and Olvera Street, while the city maintains distinct identities across its numerous neighborhoods and adjacent municipalities.
Los Angeles is a major global hub for television, motion pictures, and music, attracting visitors with its celebrity culture and show business history. The city offers Mediterranean climate conditions and numerous beaches that fostered California's surf culture. It also serves as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, drawing international attention to its entertainment and sporting events.
The city proper has a population of 3,898,747 as of 2020. Its economy boasts one of the busiest container ports in the Americas and a gross metropolitan product exceeding $1.295 trillion in 2024. The metropolitan area supports over 18 million residents, while the city itself recorded over 3.6 million visitors in 2023, making it the third-most visited city in the United States.
