US- City and County of Denver
- Mile High City
Denver is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Colorado, situated in the South Platte River valley on the western edge of the High Plains. It lies just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, with its downtown district positioned approximately twelve miles from the mountain foothills. As a consolidated city and county, it serves as the economic and cultural center of the broader Front Range Urban Corridor.
Founded in 1858 during the Gold Rush era at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River, Denver was named after James W. Denver, the governor of the Kansas Territory. Originally established as a mining town, it grew from prospecting origins to become a principal commercial hub. It served as the Arapahoe County seat until consolidation in 1902 and became the permanent state capital following an 1881 referendum.
The city is known for its vibrant arts scene and distinct neighborhoods, embracing both its cowboy heritage and modern cosmopolitan character. Notable landmarks include the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Denver Art Museum, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The historic Denver Union Station marks the passage of the 105th meridian west of Greenwich, which defines the Mountain Time Zone.
Denver functions as a major cultural hub with dozens of outdoor festivals and a variety of museums that attract visitors from across the region. It hosts professional sports teams in five leagues and serves as the headquarters for eight Fortune 500 firms. The city offers easy access to the Rocky Mountains while providing a spectacular view of the peaks rising just west of the Colorado State Capitol.
The city had a population of 715,522 as of 2020, with the ten-county metropolitan area containing 3.1 million residents. Denver experiences a dry climate with abundant sunshine and four pronounced seasons, featuring heavy snowfalls between October and March. The area is known for Chinook winds that dramatically raise winter temperatures, making it generally mild compared to surrounding regions.
