Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois and the third-most populous city in the United States. Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, it serves as the cultural, economic, transportation, and commercial center of the Chicago metropolitan area and the broader Midwest. The city is known for its distinctive skyline, extensive lakefront, diverse neighborhoods, major museums, architecture, music, food, sports, and influential role in American history.

Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 and grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location connecting the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River basin. The arrival of major railroads transformed Chicago into one of the nation's most important transportation and industrial centers. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the central city, but Chicago was rapidly rebuilt and became a center of modern architecture and urban development.

The city played a major role in the development of modern skyscraper architecture, with pioneering buildings such as the Home Insurance Building and later landmarks including the Willis Tower and John Hancock Center. Chicago's architecture, elevated rail system, and extensive downtown area remain defining features of the city.

Chicago's neighborhoods reflect waves of immigration and migration from around the world. Communities with strong Polish, Irish, Italian, Mexican, African American, Asian, and other cultural influences have shaped the city's identity, cuisine, music, arts, and traditions. The Great Migration also transformed Chicago into a major center of African American culture, contributing significantly to the development of blues, jazz, gospel, and later house music.

The city is home to major institutions and attractions including Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Grant Park, and the Chicago Riverwalk. Its professional sports teams include the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago remains a major global economic center, with significant financial, technological, manufacturing, transportation, education, and cultural industries. O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport connect the city to destinations throughout the United States and around the world. The Chicago River, Lake Michigan waterfront, extensive parks, and diverse neighborhoods contribute to the city's distinctive character.

As of the 2020 census, Chicago had a population of 2,746,388. The city covers approximately 234 square miles and is divided into 77 official community areas. Chicago is the seat of Cook County and serves as the principal city of the Chicago metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolitan regions in North America.
