Indio is a city located in central Riverside County, California, within the Coachella Valley region of Southern California's Colorado Desert. Situated approximately 125 miles east of Los Angeles and 23 miles east of Palm Springs, it serves as the principal city of the Indio–Palm Desert–Palm Springs urban area. The city lies in the geologic Salton Sink, an area characterized by low elevation, with its city hall positioned 14 feet below sea level. It functions as a key administrative and geographic hub for this desert valley.

The city originated in 1876 when the Southern Pacific Railroad established it as a halfway point for water refills between Los Angeles and Yuma, Arizona. Originally named Indian Wells, the name was changed to Indio, a Spanish variation of Indian, to avoid confusion with other locations. It incorporated as a city in 1930 and grew from a railroad town into an agricultural center known for date crops. The area also served as home to the USDA's Date Station, which advanced scientific research on dates starting in 1907.

Indio is defined by its role as a commercial center and its connection to the desert landscape. It was formerly referred to as the Hub of the Valley, a slogan used in the mid-twentieth century. The city features the craftsman-style Southern Pacific Depot station, which once anchored social life in the desert. Today, it is an official National Bird Sanctuary due to seasonal migration routes crossing the town. The urban area includes significant agricultural lands and historic sites tied to its development as a health resort and farming community.

The city is widely recognized for its numerous cultural events, earning the nickname City of Festivals. It hosts major gatherings such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Festival. Historically, Indio was advertised as a health resort for senior citizens and those with respiratory ailments. The local culture is deeply influenced by its agricultural heritage, particularly the date industry, which connects to Middle Eastern themes seen in events like the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival.

As of the 2020 census, Indio had a population of 89,137, making it the most populous city in the Coachella Valley. The climate is warm year-round with hot summers and mild winters, averaging 76 degrees Fahrenheit annually. Access to the city is primarily via Interstate 10 and State Route 111. Palm Springs International Airport serves as the nearest major commercial airport, located about 30 minutes away by taxi. The area receives over 348 days of sunshine per year with minimal annual precipitation.
