Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America, lying between Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador with coasts on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. A chain of thirty-seven volcanoes runs along its Pacific side, and the highlands behind them hold most of the population and the largest Indigenous population in Central America, with more than twenty Mayan languages in daily use alongside Spanish. The lowland north contains Petén, the rainforest region where the Classic Maya cities including Tikal were built. Thirty-six years of civil war ended in 1996, and the country has since combined steady economic growth with persistently high inequality and emigration.
