Demak is a town and administrative district located in the Central Java Province of Indonesia. It serves as the capital of Demak Regency, holding significant administrative importance within the region. The district covers an area of 61.13 square kilometers and sits at coordinates -6.8833 latitude and 110.6333 longitude. As a key urban center, it functions as the seat for the regency that bears its name, anchoring local governance and civic life in this part of Java.

The town was the capital of the Demak Sultanate, recognized as the first Islamic kingdom in Java. Founded in 1475 by Raden Patah, the sultanate played a pivotal role in spreading Islam across the island. It reached its zenith under Trenggana, expanding into East Java and conquering the remaining Majapahit Empire territories. The state declined due to succession conflicts, leading Hadiwijaya to move the capital to Pajang in 1568.

Demak features nineteen administrative villages, including six urban kelurahans and thirteen rural desas. Notable landmarks include the Demak Great Mosque, built in 1479, which lacks a dome and instead has a tiered roof with a pillar attributed to Sunan Kalijaga. The town also contains the grave of Raden Patah and the grave of Sunan Kalijaga, one of the Nine Saints who helped spread Islam throughout Java.

Visitors are drawn to the area's rich Islamic heritage and local culinary traditions. The town offers mangrove trekking opportunities northwest of the downtown area. Local cuisine includes Asem-asem daging, Botok telur asin, and Nasi ndoreng. Handicrafts such as Arabic calligraphy and food souvenirs like Kerupuk catak crackers are available. The central square, Alun-Alun Demak, serves as a gathering point for the community.

The population was 110,165 according to the 2020 Census, with an estimated 115,115 residents by mid-2023. Demak has a tropical monsoon climate, experiencing heavy rainfall from November to April and moderate rain from May to October. Access is facilitated by the Great Post Road connecting Semarang, Kudus, and Surabaya, as well as the Bintoro bus terminal serving major Java destinations.
