Agira is a town and municipality situated in the Province of Enna within the autonomous island region of Sicily, Italy. Located in the mid-valley of the River Salso, it lies approximately 35 kilometres from the provincial capital of Enna. As a comune, it serves as an administrative unit for the local community, positioned in the central part of the Sicilian landscape.
The settlement stands on the site of the ancient Sicel city of Agyrion, which later became known as Agyrium under Roman rule. Until 1861, the town was called San Filippo d'Argiriò in honour of its patron saint, Philip of Agira. It is recognized as one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia, highlighting its heritage status among Italy's most beautiful villages.
The modern city overlies the ancient one, with few traces remaining of the original structures. Notable landmarks include an Arab–Byzantine castle with two standing towers, later rebuilt by the Hohenstaufen, and several historic churches such as the Norman Chiesa Madre and Santa Margherita. The area also features the Pozzillo artificial lake and the Riserva di Piano della Corte reserve.
Cultural influences from Spanish and Jewish arrivals are visible in the local architecture, including a former synagogue. The town is a centre for agriculture, producing cereals, almonds, olives, and grapes, while pastures support cattle, sheep, and horse breeding. These agricultural traditions define the local economy and daily life for residents.
As of 2023, the population is 7,671. The town has a railway station located south of the urban area, providing transport access. While specific climate data is not detailed, the region features sulphur springs and eucalyptus woods near the lake, offering natural attractions for visitors interested in the local environment and historical sites.
