Ciudad Juárez is the most populous city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, situated on the Rio Grande directly south of El Paso, Texas. It serves as the seat of the Juárez Municipality and forms part of the El Paso–Juárez binational metropolitan area, which is the second largest on the Mexico–U.S. border after San Diego–Tijuana. The city lies within the Chihuahuan Desert and functions as a critical border town connecting central northern Mexico with the United States.

Founded in 1659 by Franciscan Friar García de San Francisco, the settlement was originally named El Paso del Norte, meaning "The North Pass." It became the first permanent Spanish development in the area during the 1660s. The city retained this name until 1888, when it was renamed in honor of Benito Juárez, whose republican forces had temporarily stopped there during the French intervention. Its strategic importance grew significantly after the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo established the Rio Grande as the international border.

The city features a mix of historical and modern architecture, including neo-colonial façades on public buildings and arched porticos around the main square created during a beautification program. It is home to the Escobar brothers' Escuela Particular de Agricultura, founded in 1906 as the first institution of higher education. The urban landscape reflects its northern Mexican vaquero culture, distinct from the tropical imagery often associated with Mexico, and includes landmarks like the old Mercado Cuauhtémoc and various parks established during the Porfirian era.

Ciudad Juárez offers a unique cultural experience rooted in the northern traditions of Mexico, attracting visitors interested in its history and industrial heritage. The city has been designated "The City of the Future" by fDi Magazine for its rapid industrial growth. While it has faced challenges with crime and violence, particularly regarding drug trafficking and femicide, it remains a significant destination for those exploring the border region's complex social and economic dynamics.

The city had a population of 1,321,004 as of 2010, with an estimated metropolitan population of 2.5 million people. Its economy is heavily driven by industry, including over 300 maquiladoras, and it serves as a major transportation hub with four international points of entry connecting to El Paso. These bridges facilitated nearly 23 million crossings in 2008. The climate is arid, typical of the Chihuahuan Desert, requiring visitors to be aware of water scarcity issues that have historically impacted the region.
