Masdar City is an urban community located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Situated at coordinates 24.4292 north latitude and 54.6183 east longitude, it serves as a dedicated hub for sustainable development and innovation within the emirate. The project was initiated by the UAE government to demonstrate advanced eco-city principles, functioning as a specialized district focused on green technology and renewable energy research rather than traditional residential or commercial zoning.
The project was launched in 2006 with a $22 billion budget provided by the state-owned Mubadala Investment Company. Construction officially began in February 2008, with the first six buildings completed and occupied by October 2010. Originally scheduled for completion by 2016, the timeline was indefinitely delayed due to the global financial crisis, with subsequent estimates pushing final completion to 2030. The development remains a work in progress, covering less than a sixth of its originally intended area.
Designed by Foster and Partners, the city features elevated districts separated from vehicle traffic and utilizes passive design elements like wind towers and narrow streets for ventilation. Notable structures include the LEED Platinum Siemens regional headquarters, which uses significantly less energy and water than typical offices, and the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency. The area also hosts the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, G42, the UAE Space Agency, and Khalifa University within its tech park.
The community attracts visitors and professionals interested in sustainable urban planning and clean energy technologies. It has been endorsed by the World Wide Fund for Nature and Bioregional as an official One Planet Living Community for its environmental goals. The site features palmwood architectural elements and recycled shipping container structures, drawing attention from international organizations like the US Department of Energy, which partnered with Masdar to share expertise on zero-carbon city development.
As of 2023, the population consisted of 15,000 people living and working in the city, including only 5,000 residents. The economy is driven by research institutions and renewable energy agencies rather than mass tourism. Transportation includes a prototype personal rapid transit system and autonomous shuttles, with internal combustion engine vehicles prohibited inside the city. Abu Dhabi's planned light rail may eventually connect the center to the metropolitan area, though the project remains delayed.
