Hounslow is a large town in West London, England, situated approximately 10 and three-quarter miles west-southwest of Charing Cross. It serves as the administrative centre of the London Borough of Hounslow and is identified in the London Plan as one of the 14 metropolitan centres in Greater London. The town is bounded by Isleworth to the east, Twickenham to the south, Feltham to the west, and Southall to the north.
The settlement originated around the Holy Trinity Priory, founded in 1211, which developed a small village into a town with regular markets. Although the priory was dissolved in 1539, Hounslow remained an important staging post on the Bath Road. The construction of the Great Western Railway in 1838 and the Hounslow Loop Line in 1850 prompted new development, while the Great West Road in the 1920s attracted factories and housing.
The area features Hounslow Heath, which has a continuous recorded history dating back to the Norman period and was historically known for highwaymen. The Heath served as a military encampment for Oliver Cromwell and James II, and in 1784, King George IV attended measurements for the Ordnance Survey there. The Hounslow Heath Aerodrome operated from 1910 to 1920, hosting the first scheduled daily international commercial air services.
Hounslow Town Centre is a busy predominantly retail hub featuring the Treaty Centre, which opened in 1987 and contains over 50 shops including JD, Next, and H&M. The Blenheim Centre complex, completed in 2006, houses a large ASDA superstore and other amenities. A new retail area, the High Street Quarter, is set to include a ten-screen Cineworld cinema multiplex alongside residential towers and restaurants.
The suburban district had a population of 103,337 in the 2011 census, with the wider borough reaching 254,000. It is the borough's most diverse town, with a high proportion of BAME residents, including large British Asian and Somali communities. As an economic hub, it hosts businesses like DHL Air UK and Gillette, with commuters accessing Central London within 45 to 60 minutes.
