Buffalo is a city located in the U.S. state of New York, situated in Western New York on the eastern shore of Lake Erie. It rests at the head of the Niagara River along the Canada–United States border and serves as the county seat of Erie County. As the second-most populous city in New York State, it functions as the cultural and economic center of the Western New York region, anchoring a metropolitan area that ranks as the state's second-largest behind only the NYC Metro.
The region was originally inhabited by nomadic Paleo-Indians, followed by the Neutral, Erie, and Iroquois nations. Permanent white settlement began in 1789 when Cornelius Winney established a trading post, and land agent Joseph Ellicott later laid out the village, initially naming it New Amsterdam before renaming it Buffalo after the adjacent creek. The city's growth accelerated significantly when it was selected as the terminus of the Erie Canal in 1825, leading to its incorporation in 1832 and establishing it as a primary inland port between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.
Historically dominated by steel production and railway hubs, Buffalo retains a palpable sense of its industrial past through majestic historic buildings. The city features the oldest urban parks system in the United States and notable landmarks such as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the Buffalo History Museum, Shea's Performing Arts Center, and the Buffalo Museum of Science. These sites tell the story of the city's rise from a frontier outpost to an industrial powerhouse and its subsequent resurgence through cleaner, high-tech industries.
Buffalo is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, tight-knit neighborhoods, and sunny summers in the Northeastern United States. The city hosts several annual festivals and is famous for its winter weather and the invention of Buffalo wings. Educational institutions like the University at Buffalo and Canisius University contribute to its cultural landscape, while major-league sports teams, including the NFL's Buffalo Bills and NHL's Buffalo Sabres, draw significant local and regional interest.
The city proper had a population of 278,349 as of the 2020 census, while the broader Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area contained over 1.16 million residents. The metropolitan gross domestic product was $53 billion in 2019, reflecting an economy that has diversified into health care, retail, tourism, logistics, and education. Despite its reputation for heavy snowfall, the city offers diverse attractions ranging from world-class museums to historic sites along the Niagara Frontier.
