Fort Myers is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States, serving as the county seat. Located in Southwest Florida along the Caloosahatchee River, it anchors the Cape Coral–Fort Myers metropolitan statistical area. The city acts as a gateway to the region and is a major tourist destination within the state, known for its casual feel and winter weather.
The community was founded by Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez on February 21, 1866, after the U.S. government abandoned the original fort. The site originally housed Fort Dulaney during the Second Seminole War before being replaced by Fort Harvie and later Fort Myers in 1850. Named for Colonel Abraham Myers, the fort played roles in the Seminole Wars and Civil War before the civilian settlement grew around its ruins.
The city features Centennial Park downtown along the river, the IMAG History & Science Center, and the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. It is home to the winter estates of Thomas Edison, known as Seminole Lodge, and Henry Ford, called The Mangoes. These historic sites are major attractions that define the local heritage and architectural landscape.
Fort Myers draws visitors with its reputation for recreational fishing and its history as a winter retreat for industrialists. The city hosts historical sites related to its African American and Latin American populations, including the Williams Academy in Clemente Park.
