By 1839, the town supported a population of 766 people who grazed cattle and sheep while producing milk and maple syrup.

Recreational skiing began developing in the area during the late 1930s, with the first tow built by the Warren Outing Club. In 1958, Damon Gadd and Jack Murphy founded Sugarbush Ski Area on Lincoln Peak, installing a three-seat gondola that was then the nation's longest lift. This development transformed the local economy into one focused on tourism, drawing visitors to the resort and the surrounding natural environment for outdoor activities.
The population of Warren was 1,977 as of the 2020 census. The town covers a total area of forty square miles, with the vast majority being land.
