Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a commune situated in the Haute-Savoie department within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. Positioned on the flanks of Mont Blanc, it serves as an Alpine resort and spa town that has evolved significantly from its origins into a major destination for winter sports and summer alpine activities. The village lies in a valley accessible via the A40 motorway and is connected to neighboring towns such as Chamonix and Martigny through specialized railway lines.
The settlement grew up as a spa town during the nineteenth century before expanding its infrastructure to support skiing and mountaineering tourism. Its history includes a tragic event in 1892 when a water pocket in the Tête Rousse Glacier burst, causing flooding that killed two hundred people. In response to glacial risks, modern measures including melt-water pumping and alarm systems were implemented in 2010 to mitigate potential outburst floods from deep-set water pockets within the glacier.
The town features traditional architecture and historical buildings that provide charm distinct from purpose-built resorts, with a significant year-round population. Key districts include Le Fayet, where the thermal spa Les Thermes is located within Parc Thermal, and the upper village areas near ski lifts. The resort offers access to a vast ski domain comprising 445 kilometers of pistes, making it the third largest exclusively in France, while also serving as a base for climbing Mont Blanc via the Voie Royale.
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains attracts a multi-national client base for snow sports in winter and activities like hiking, paragliding, and rafting in summer. The area avoids heavy congestion found in neighboring resorts due to its layout and investment in new lifts, including six express chair lifts over the last decade. Visitors utilize the Evasion Mont Blanc ski pass, which extends to Megeve, Vallorcine, Martigny, Verbier, and Courmayeur, benefiting from high investment programs by the STBMA operator.
The commune had a population of 5,755 as of 2023. Property prices remain generally lower than nearby resorts despite high demand for main and second homes. Transport links include the Gare de Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet station, which connects to Paris and Geneva, and the Mont Blanc Tramway that ascends to the Nid d'Aigle station at 2,372 meters altitude. The ski season typically runs from mid-December to mid-April, supported by snow cannons and reliable infrastructure.
