Grand Mound is a small city located in Clinton County within the state of Iowa, United States. Situated in the Midwestern region of the country, it occupies a total area of 1.82 square miles, all of which is land. The community serves as a residential locality within the broader administrative framework of Clinton County, contributing to the regional demographic landscape of eastern Iowa.

The town's development was significantly influenced by the arrival of the Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad in 1858, which led to the construction of a local train station. Grand Mound was officially platted in 1866, with its name derived from a nearby feature known as Sand Mound. A recording error during this process resulted in the current spelling, which has remained uncorrected since its inception.

The physical character of the city is defined by its residential infrastructure and historical educational sites. The former Grand Mound Elementary School property, spanning approximately four acres, features a building from 1954 that once housed a cafeteria, gymnasium, and classrooms. This site was later repurposed for administrative and therapeutic services before being sold to God's Family Baptist Church following the school's closure in 2002.

Cultural life in Grand Mound has historically centered around its educational institutions, particularly the former junior-senior high school whose sports teams were known as the Cardinals. The community's heritage is tied to the consolidation of local school districts, with the last graduating senior class from the independent high school departing in 1961 when it merged with Welton and DeWitt to form the Central Community School District.

As of the 2020 census, the population of Grand Mound was recorded at 615 residents. The community is served by the Central DeWitt Community School District, which consolidated services for elementary-aged students in DeWitt after local schools closed. The area maintains a stable residential profile with a median age of 38.6 years, reflecting a balanced demographic distribution across various age groups within the county.
