Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the Southern United States, situated in Southeast Texas near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Founded by land investors on August 30, 1836, at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, Houston was incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837. Named after former General Sam Houston, it briefly served as the capital of the Republic of Texas before growing into a regional trading center. The 20th century brought rapid expansion fueled by the port, railroads, and the Texas oil boom.
