Dover-Foxcroft is the largest town in and the seat of Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. Located near the geographic center of the state, it serves as the commercial hub for the region. The town lies within the Highlands region and is drained by the Piscataquis River, which historically provided water power sites for industrial development. Its central position makes it a key administrative and economic node in northern Maine.
The community originated as two separate towns, Dover and Foxcroft, divided by the Piscataquis River. Dover was purchased from Massachusetts by Boston merchants and settled in 1803, while Foxcroft was conveyed to Bowdoin College before being purchased and incorporated in 1812. The two municipalities merged on March 1, 1922, to form the current town. Early industries included agriculture and various mills, with significant manufacturing growth occurring in the late nineteenth century.
The town features notable historic districts, including the American Woolen Company Foxcroft Mill, a collection of industrial buildings added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Center Theatre, built in 1940, operates as a performing arts venue and movie theater with two auditoriums. Cultural attractions include the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, an annual event held in late June to honor the state treat. The town is home to Foxcroft Academy, a private secondary school with boarding facilities, and serves as a gateway to outdoor recreation via nearby Peaks-Kenny State Park on Sebec Lake. Visitors can access hiking trails, campsites, and water sports, while the local economy supports various retail and service establishments.
The population was 4,422 at the 2020 census. The town is crossed by state routes 6, 7, 15, 16, and 153, facilitating regional access. Dover-Foxcroft experiences a humid continental climate with large seasonal temperature differences, featuring warm summers and cold winters. This climatic pattern influences the seasonal nature of local tourism and outdoor activities throughout the year.
