Evanston is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, within the United States. It sits on the shores of Lake Michigan, forming part of the North Shore region and serving as a suburb of Chicago. Geographically, it lies approximately 12 miles north of the Chicago Loop. The city is bordered by Wilmette to the north, Skokie to the west, Chicago to the south, and the lake to the east.
The area was originally inhabited by Potawatomi Native Americans before French explorers named it Grosse Pointe. Methodist business leaders founded Northwestern University in 1851 and established the city of Evanston in 1857, naming it after John Evans. Incorporated as a town in 1863, it expanded through annexations and was formally organized as a city in 1892. The city has a complex history involving its relationship with the university and significant local events.
The city is heavily shaped by the presence of Northwestern University, one of the world's leading research universities, which influences its internal character. It is home to the Music Institute of Chicago and serves as the headquarters for organizations such as Rotary International and Alpha Phi International women's fraternity. The shoreline was significantly altered in the 1960s when the university added a 74-acre lakefill project.
Evanston claims origins for both Tinkertoys and the ice cream sundae, reflecting its cultural heritage. It hosted the first NCAA basketball championship final in 1939 and the second assembly of the World Council of Churches in 1954. The city is known for its ethnically diverse population and has been a site for progressive initiatives, including becoming the first U.S. city to pay reparations to African American residents in 2021.
As of 2020, the population was 78,110. The city experiences a hot-summer humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Access is provided via Interstate 90/94, Metra trains, and CTA Purple Line services from Chicago. Public transportation also connects the area to O'Hare International Airport through various bus and rail options, supporting its role as a residential and educational hub.
