Mogilev, also known as Mahilyow, is a major city located in eastern Belarus. It serves as the administrative centre of the Mogilev Region and stands as the third-largest city in the country. The urban area sits on the banks of the Dnieper River, positioned approximately 76 kilometres from the border with Russia's Smolensk Oblast and 105 km from Bryansk Oblast. Its strategic location has historically made it a key node for regional connectivity and trade within Eastern Europe.

First mentioned in historical records in 1267, Mogilev was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before joining the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, where it was known as Mohylew. It received city rights under Magdeburg law in 1577 and later became part of the Russian Empire following the First Partition of Poland in 1772. The city endured significant turmoil during World War II, suffering German occupation from 1941 to 1944 before being liberated by the Red Army. Today, it remains one of Belarus's principal cities since independence in 1991.

The city features notable historical architecture, including the convent of St. Nicholas with its cathedral built in 1668, which retains its original iconostasis and bell tower. This site is under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status. Other landmarks include the Museum of Ethnography, showcasing artisan crafts and a replica peasant hut, and St. Stanislas Church, whose original frescoes survived the war. The Buinichi Field serves as a war memorial to the soldiers and civilians who defended the city in 1941.

Mogilev is a significant cultural and educational hub with a diverse religious heritage. It was formerly the episcopal see of the Latin Catholic Archdiocese of Mohilev and remains the see of the Eparchy of Mogilev and Mstsislaw in the Russian Orthodox Church. The city attracts visitors interested in its deep Jewish history, including sites related to the Holocaust, and offers insights into local traditions through its museums. The presence of historic monasteries and cathedrals provides a glimpse into the region's complex spiritual past.

As of 2026, the population is recorded at 352,891, having declined from 360,918 in 2011. The economy is driven by metallurgy, steel mills, and factories producing cranes, cars, and tractors, supported by an inland port on the Dnieper. Accessible by regular trains to Minsk, Moscow, and Vilnius, as well as buses and highways, the city has a warm-summer humid continental climate with cold winters, making it accessible year-round for those prepared for seasonal variations.
