Čížová, South Bohemian, Czech Republic
CZČížová is a municipality and village situated in the Písek District within the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It lies on the border between the Tábor Uplands and the Blatná Uplands, with the Otava River forming its eastern municipal boundary. The settlement is positioned approximately six kilometres northwest of Písek and roughly 49 kilometres northwest of České Budějovice. Its highest point is a hill reaching 571 metres above sea level, defining the local topography.
The first written mention of Čížová dates to 1316, although an untrustworthy chronicle entry from 1541 references the year 942. Until 1509, the area was owned by Czech kings before becoming property of the town of Písek until 1547. Subsequent notable owners included the Deym of Střítež family from 1560 to 1726, followed by the Czernin family until 1753, and finally the Lobkowicz family who held it until 1932.
The municipality consists of seven parts, with the main landmark being the Church of Saint James the Great. This structure features a Gothic core first documented in 1407 and is situated on a hill above the village. The church is surrounded by a cemetery containing the Chapel of Saint Barbara, which dates from 1759, as well as a historical bell tower. The etymology of the name likely derives from the siskin bird.
Visitor appeal centers on the architectural heritage found within the municipal territory. The primary attraction is the historic church complex, which offers views over the surrounding uplands. The presence of the chapel and bell tower adds to the cultural landscape, providing insight into the religious history of the region. The area serves as a destination for those interested in local history and Gothic architecture.
As of 2025, the population is recorded at 1,366 inhabitants, while earlier counts noted approximately 1,400 residents. Transport infrastructure includes the D4 motorway, which briefly passes through the southern part of the municipal territory along its border. Additionally, Čížová is located on the railway line connecting Prague and České Budějovice, facilitating regional access for residents and travelers alike.
