Japan is an island country situated in East Asia within the Pacific Ocean, positioned off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland. It is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, the Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the East China Sea to the south. The nation comprises a vast archipelago consisting of four major islands alongside over 14,000 smaller islands. Administratively, the country is divided into 47 prefectures and eight traditional regions, with approximately 75% of its terrain being mountainous and heavily forested.

The first known habitation of the archipelago dates to the Upper Paleolithic period, with the Japanese Paleolithic beginning around 36,000 BC. Between the 4th and 6th centuries, various kingdoms were united under an emperor in Nara and later in Heian-kyō. From the 12th century, power was held by military aristocrats known as shōgun and feudal lords called daimyō. After a century of warring states, Japan was unified in 1600 by the Tokugawa shogunate, which implemented an isolationist foreign policy until forced to open trade in 1853.

Tokyo serves as the country's capital and largest city, acting as the main financial center. The landscape is characterized by heavily forested mountains that concentrate the highly urbanized population along eastern coastal plains. Historical sites include Nara, the first capital of a united Japan with many Buddhist shrines, and Kyoto, the ancient capital considered the cultural heart of the country. Other notable destinations feature Hiroshima Castle, Nagasaki's blend of influences, and Sapporo, famous for its snow festival.

The culture of Japan is well known globally, particularly its popular culture expressed in animation, art, comics, cuisine, fashion, films, music, television, theater, and video games. Japanese pop culture drives significant tourism, while the sophisticated cuisine has spread worldwide. Traditional values emphasize inner balance, tranquility, and natural beauty. The retail sector is renowned for legendary customer service, and visitors often appreciate the contrast between cherished heritage and ultra-modern infrastructure.

Japan has a population of 123,802,000 as of 2024, making it the world's 11th most populous country. It is a developed nation with one of the world's largest economies by nominal GDP and a global leader in automotive, electronics, and robotics industries. Although it maintains one of the strongest militaries, it has constitutionally renounced the right to declare war. The country faces population decline and economic stagnation known as the Lost Decades following the collapse of the asset price bubble in the early 1990s.
