Sapporo is a designated city in Hokkaido, Japan, situated within the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River, a tributary of the Ishikari River. Located in the southwest of the island, it serves as the capital of both Hokkaido Prefecture and Ishikari Subprefecture. As the largest city in Hokkaido and the largest north of Tokyo, it functions as the region's primary cultural, economic, and political center.

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people, the area contained trade posts during the Edo period before becoming an administrative center in 1869 with the establishment of the Hokkaido Development Commission headquarters. Inspired by ancient Kyoto, it adopted a grid plan around Odori Park. After World War II, it replaced Otaru as the commercial hub, surpassing one million residents by 1970.

The city features orderly boulevards and little traditional architecture, defined instead by green spaces like Odori Park and Hokkaido University. Notable sites include the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo TV Tower. The Sapporo Dome hosts major sporting events, while the city retains historical structures like the Hokkaidō government office building and the Hōheikan hotel.

Sapporo is renowned for its harsh winters and extensive snowfall, hosting the world-famous annual Sapporo Snow Festival which draws over two million tourists. It was the first Asian host of the Winter Olympics in 1972 and has also hosted the FIFA World Cup and Rugby World Cup matches. The city offers excellent facilities for winter sports and cultural events like the Pacific Music Festival.

The population was 1,959,313 as of 2020. It is served by Okadama Airport for regional flights and New Chitose Airport for international travel. Summers are cool and pleasant, while winters are harsh with approximately six meters of snowfall annually. The city's name derives from the Ainu phrase sat poro pet, meaning dry great river.
