North Conway is a census-designated place and village located in eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire, within the United States. Situated in the northern part of the town of Conway, it serves as the second-largest village in that municipality after Conway proper. The area lies in the heart of the White Mountains region, with the White Mountain National Forest bordering it to the west and north. It maintains its own fire station, post office, and public library while sharing other municipal services with the town.
The town was chartered in 1765 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth and named for Henry Seymour Conway, a prominent English statesman. Early settlers referred to the area as Pequawket, adopting the name of an Abenaki Indian village that stretched down the Saco River. The rugged terrain gained popularity among artists in the nineteenth century, leading to the development of White Mountain art. Tourism expanded significantly after the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad extended service to North Conway in 1872.
The village is defined by its role as a year-round resort area and a major destination for outdoor recreation. Notable landmarks include Cathedral Ledge in Echo Lake State Park, a popular rock climbing site with a road-accessible summit, and Cranmore Mountain Resort. The area also features the Green Hills Preserve, which encompasses Rattlesnake Mountain, Middle Mountain, and Peaked Mountain. Historic sites on the National Register of Historic Places include the North Conway 5 and 10 Cent Store and the Eastern Slope Inn.
North Conway attracts visitors with its large number of outlet shops, antique stores, and country stores along Route 16. The community is known as the birthplace of American skiing, a reputation bolstered by snow trains that began operating in 1932. Cultural attractions include the Conway Scenic Railroad, which departs from a Victorian station built in 1874, and the Mount Washington Children's Museum. Autumn foliage draws tourists from late September through early October, while winter brings skiers to nearby resorts like Attitash Mountain Resort.
As of the 2020 census, North Conway had a population of 2,116 residents with a median age of 53.5 years. The economy is heavily influenced by tourism and retail, with a significant portion of housing units being vacant seasonal properties. Accessible via Interstate 93 and Route 16, the village is approximately two hours north of Boston. The climate supports diverse activities year-round, from hiking and fishing in warmer months to skiing and sledding during the winter season.
