Ciudad del Este is the second-largest city in Paraguay and serves as the capital of the Alto Paraná Department. Situated on the banks of the Paraná River, it lies in the south-eastern region of the country, adjacent to the border with Brazil. The city is connected to its Brazilian counterpart, Foz do Iguaçu, by the Friendship Bridge and forms part of the Triple Frontier region alongside Puerto Iguazú in Argentina.
The settlement was founded on 3 February 1957 by decree under the name Puerto Flor de Lis. It was later renamed Puerto Presidente Stroessner in honor of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner. Following the 1989 Paraguayan coup d'état, a referendum led to the adoption of its current name, Ciudad del Este, meaning Eastern City. The city's growth accelerated significantly during the 1960s and 1970s with the construction of the Friendship Bridge and the Itaipú Dam.
The urban area is coextensive with its district and includes the metropolitan zone of Gran Ciudad del Este. Notable landmarks include the Itaipú Dam, one of the world's largest hydroelectric power plants, and Iguazu Falls nearby. The city features numerous parks and green areas, earning it the nickname ciudad jardín or garden city. Key sites also include the Ro man Catholic Diocese seat and the Estadio Antonio Aranda football stadium.
As a major commercial hub, the city attracts visitors primarily for shopping due to its status as one of the world's largest free-trade zones. Its tax-free environment draws many Brazilians and Argentines seeking electronics and luxury goods. Cultural attractions include the Museum of the Guaraní Land and the Moisés Bertoni Scientific Monument. The area also offers access to natural wonders like the Saltos del Monday waterfalls.
The city has a population of 350,000 as of 2024. Its economy contributes significantly to Paraguay's GDP, driven by services, industry, and cross-border trade with Brazil. Ciudad del Este experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and temperate winters. The region receives approximately 1,700 millimeters of precipitation annually, with occasional snowfall recorded during winter months.
