Târgoviște is a historic city in central-southern Romania and the capital of Dâmbovița County, situated along the Ialomița River at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The city lies between the Wallachian Plain and the Subcarpathian hills, giving the surrounding region a mixture of fertile agricultural land, wooded hills and mountain views. Its location has made Târgoviște an important regional center for centuries, particularly because of its position along historic routes connecting the southern Romanian plains with the Carpathian interior.
Târgoviște is best known for its important role in the history of medieval Wallachia. From the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries, it served for extended periods as the capital and principal residence of the princes of Wallachia. The city's historic importance is reflected in its surviving churches, archaeological remains and former princely complex, which provide evidence of its role as a political and cultural center during the development of the medieval Romanian state.
The Curtea Domnească, or Princely Court, is one of the city's most significant landmarks. The historic complex contains the remains of the former princely residence, defensive structures and religious buildings, including the Chindiei Tower. Built during the period associated with Vlad III, commonly known as Vlad the Impaler, the tower has become one of Târgoviște's most recognizable symbols. The surrounding archaeological site illustrates the scale and importance of the former Wallachian court.
The city contains numerous churches and historic buildings reflecting different periods of Romanian history. The Metropolitan Church of Târgoviște and other historic religious sites contribute to the architectural character of the city, while museums preserve archaeological artifacts, religious objects and material connected with Wallachian political and cultural history. The historic center combines these older structures with later nineteenth- and twentieth-century urban development.
Târgoviște's surroundings are characterized by the transition between the flat agricultural landscapes of southern Romania and the wooded foothills of the Carpathians. The Ialomița River passes through the wider region, while the nearby hills and forests provide opportunities for walking, recreation and exploration. Farther north, the landscape rises toward the Bucegi and other Carpathian mountain areas, creating a strong geographic connection between the city and Romania's mountainous interior.
The city also has an important modern industrial and educational role within Dâmbovița County. Manufacturing, services, commerce and education contribute to the local economy, while its historic attractions continue to draw visitors interested in Romanian history and architecture. Its position relatively close to Bucharest also places Târgoviște within the broader economic and cultural sphere of southern Romania.
Today, Târgoviște combines the character of a modern regional city with a particularly strong medieval heritage. The remains of the former Wallachian capital, historic churches, museums and surrounding Carpathian foothills give the city a distinctive place in Romania's cultural landscape. Its combination of historical landmarks, river valleys, wooded hills and access to the mountains makes Târgoviște an important destination for exploring the history and geography of central-southern Romania.
