Zhonghe District is an inner city district located in New Taipei City within northern Taiwan. Situated just south-west of Taipei City, it shares borders with Banqiao, Xindian, Tucheng, and Yonghe Districts of New Taipei City, as well as Taipei City itself. The area is heavily urbanized, lying a few tens of meters above sea level, with forested hilly country in the southeast. A mountainous ridge forms most of its eastern border with Xindian.
The present-day area was originally settled by aboriginal tribes and later by Han Chinese migrants from Fujian. Under Japanese rule, it was known as Chūwa. In 1946, it was founded as an urban township in Taipei County with a population of 30,000. It gained county-administered city status in 1979 after reaching 170,000 residents and became a district of New Taipei City on December 25, 2010.
The district is divided into 93 villages and features notable sites such as the 302-meter Fenglusai peak. Key landmarks include Jinhe Sports Park, Dinosaur Park, and the 8-23 Memorial Park, which houses the National Taiwan Library. The area also contains numerous temples like Hongludi Temple and Zhonghe Yuantong Temple, alongside cultural sites such as Burma Street near Nanshijiao metro station.
Zhonghe offers diverse visitor appeal through its religious heritage and unique immigrant communities. Burma Street is home to a large proportion of Taiwan's Burmese Chinese population, featuring stores selling Burmese produce and occasional cultural events. The district also hosts night markets like Xingnan Night Market and Fangliao Night Market, providing local culinary experiences and shopping opportunities for residents and tourists alike.
The population was 402,949 as of 2026. The economy includes offices for technology companies such as Viewsonic and Cooler Master. Transportation is served by the Zhonghe–Xinlu line and Circular line of the New Taipei Metro, along with National Highway 3 and Provincial Highway 64. The climate features an average annual temperature of 21.7 °C and precipitation averaging 2,111 millimetres per year.
