FRVal-d'Isère is a commune situated in the Tarentaise Valley within the Savoie department of southeastern France. It lies near the border with Italy, approximately five kilometers away, and borders the Vanoise National Park, which was established in 1963. The location serves as a significant alpine resort in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, known for its high-altitude terrain and proximity to major transport hubs like Lyon, Geneva, and Chambéry.
Human habitation in the valley predates Roman times, with traces of Celtic tribes found in the area. The town received parish rights in 1637, and its historic parish church was constructed in 1664. Val-d'Isère was part of the historical land of Savoy, which emerged as a feudal territory of the House of Savoy between the 11th and 14th centuries before becoming part of modern France.
The resort features distinct architectural zones, with chalet-style buildings dominating the western and central areas, while high-rise structures characterize the eastern part. Key landmarks include the Face de Bellevarde, site of the 1992 Olympic downhill race, and two mountain huts owned by the national park. Val-d'Isère is renowned for hosting World Cup alpine events and the 2009 World Championships, alongside its role in the 1992 Winter Olympics. It attracts visitors for its extensive lift-served off-piste skiing and summer activities like mountain biking. The resort also features a vibrant nightlife and dining scene, with local specialties such as fondue and raclette, and has appeared in popular culture including Absolutely Fabulous and Les Bronzés.
The commune had a population of 1,567 as of 2023. It experiences a subarctic climate with an average annual temperature of 3.8 °C and significant snowfall, making it ideal for winter sports. Access is facilitated by the Bourg-Saint-Maurice train station and nearby airports in Geneva, Lyon, and Chambéry, with free shuttle buses connecting the pedestrian-only village center to ski lifts.
