USKittery Point is a census-designated place located within the town of Kittery in York County, Maine, United States. Situated beside the Atlantic Ocean, it forms part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community occupies a strategic position bounded by Spruce Creek, the Piscataqua River, and Brave Boat Harbor, with its geography comprising both land and significant water areas along the coast.
First settled in 1623, Kittery Point traces its origins to early seafarers who colonized the shores of what became the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The area was initially associated with Sir Francis Champernowne and later incorporated into the town of Kittery in 1652. Early development was driven by fishing, timber harvesting, and trade, with notable families like the Pepperrells establishing mercantile empires that supplied the London market during the colonial era.
The landscape is defined by historic sites including Fort McClary State Historic Site and Fort Foster Park on Gerrish Island. Architectural heritage includes the Lady Pepperrell House and the John Bray House, which is considered the oldest surviving house in Maine. The area also features Seapoint Beach and Tudor cottages built by the Newcomen Society near the shore, reflecting its long maritime and defensive history along the Piscataqua River.
Cultural attractions draw visitors to the region's rich naval and colonial past. Key sites include the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses Cutts Island. The area offers scenic views of Portsmouth Harbor and the Isles of Shoals, providing opportunities for historical exploration and nature appreciation within a setting that preserves its coastal identity and heritage landmarks.
As of the 2020 census, Kittery Point had a population of 1,009 residents. The community maintains its character through preserved historic structures and public parks managed by the town and state entities. Its location provides access to coastal amenities and historical sites, serving as a residential area within the larger metropolitan region while retaining distinct local landmarks and wildlife refuges along the Atlantic coastline.
