- City of Boston
Boston serves as the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Massachusetts, functioning as a primary cultural and financial center for the New England region in the Northeastern United States. Situated on the Shawmut Peninsula, the city occupies an area of 48.4 square miles. Its strategic oceanfront location historically established it as a vital port, facilitating shipping and fishing activities that defined its colonial economy and trade routes.
Founded in 1630 by English Puritan settlers led by John Winthrop, Boston was named after the market town of Boston, Lincolnshire, England. Prior to European colonization, the area was inhabited by the Massachusett people, with the peninsula known as Shawmut or Tremontaine. The city played a central role in the American Revolution, hosting seminal events such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Siege of Boston during the Revolutionary War.
The city is defined by its historic districts and architectural heritage, including the nation's first public park, Boston Common, established in 1634. Boston expanded significantly beyond its original peninsula through land filling and annexation, retaining unique cultures from absorbed towns. Notable landmarks include the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Tremont Street subway, the first in the United States, reflecting its status as a hub for education and innovation.
Boston offers a distinct mix of puritanical ideals and liberal politics, attracting visitors with its legacy of culture and education. The city is home to prestigious institutions like Harvard University and MIT in nearby Cambridge, drawing great minds globally. Its history is preserved through numerous buildings predating the republic, while its vibrant atmosphere is refreshed annually by an influx of students and a strong sporting tradition.
As of 2020, Boston had a population of 675,647, making it the third-most populous city in the Northeastern United States. The broader metropolitan area reached 4.9 million residents in 2023. The economy is led by finance, professional services, information technology, and government, positioning the city as a national leader in medicine, engineering, and biotechnology. It remains a compact, accessible destination with extensive transit options.
