Des Moines serves as the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. Situated in the western region of the American Midwest, it lies at the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. The city functions as the county seat of Polk County, with parts of its southern extent reaching into Warren County. It anchors the six-county Des Moines metropolitan area, which is the largest metropolitan area located entirely within Iowa.
The city traces its origins to May 1843, when Captain James Allen supervised the construction of Fort Des Moines to control the Sauk and Meskwaki peoples. The fort was abandoned in 1846, and settlers subsequently occupied the site. Des Moines was incorporated as a city in 1851 and shortened from Fort Des Moines in 1857. It became the second state capital in 1857, displacing Iowa City, and grew significantly after a railroad link was completed in 1866.
The city features a Civic Center Historic District with Beaux Arts public buildings constructed during the early twentieth-century City Beautiful project. Notable landmarks include the State Capitol with its five domes, including a main dome with a 23-karat gold surface, and the former Des Moines Public Library building. Ornate riverfront balustrades line the rivers, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid-1930s to provide employment during the Great Depression.
Des Moines is the annual site of the Iowa State Fair and numerous cultural festivals during warm weather months. The city offers a good art museum and a symphony that performs in the downtown Civic Center alongside opera and ballet performances. History enthusiasts can explore 110 historic sites in and around the city, which are part of the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area. The city also hosts numerous debates during presidential primary cycles.
The population was 214,133 at the 2020 census. Des Moines is a major center for the United States insurance industry and has a sizable financial services and publishing business base, hosting headquarters for Principal Financial Group and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Summers are humid with heat indices often exceeding 90 °F, while winters bring cold conditions. The metro area has an estimated 750,000 residents.
