Galveston is a resort city and port located on the Gulf Coast of Texas in the United States. It encompasses 211.31 square miles on Galveston Island and Pelican Island, sitting at the southern end of the Greater Houston metropolitan area. The city serves as the county seat of Galveston County and is the second-largest municipality within that jurisdiction. Its position on the northwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico defines its geographic identity.

Named after 18th-century Spanish leader Bernardo de Gálvez, the area saw early European settlements around 1816 by French pirate Louis-Michel Aury. It later served as a main port for the Texas Navy and temporarily as the capital of the Republic of Texas. The city was devastated by the 1900 hurricane, which remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, before reemerging during Prohibition as a tourist hub known as the Free State of Galveston.

The city features six historic districts containing one of the largest collections of 19th-century buildings in the U.S., with over 60 structures on the National Register of Historic Places. The city commemorates Juneteenth annually on June 19, marking the announcement of freedom for enslaved African Americans in 1865. As of the 2020 census, Galveston had a population of 53,695. Its economy centers on tourism, health care, shipping, and financial industries, supported by the medical branch enrollment of over 2,500 students. Access is provided via Scholes International Airport for private flights or William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, with a drive of approximately 45 minutes. The humid subtropical climate features mild winters averaging 57°F and warm summers reaching 81°F.
