Goodyear is a city located in Maricopa County, Arizona, within the United States. Situated approximately 17 miles west of downtown Phoenix, it functions as a western suburb of the larger metropolitan area. The city limits extend significantly from the original town center, reaching north toward Glendale and south-southeast into the Rainbow Valley near Arizona State Route 238. Its geographic footprint covers a total area of 191.334 square miles, with the Gila River passing through the region and Estrella Mountains defining its southern landscape.
The city was established in 1917 when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company purchased 16,000 acres of land to cultivate cotton for vehicle tire cords. It officially became a town on November 19, 1946, after World War II brought economic activity through the construction of the Phoenix Goodyear Airport. The community incorporated as a city in 1985, and in 2008, it received the All-America City Award from the National Civic League. The original farmland was later sold for suburban development, shifting the local economy from agriculture to residential growth.
Goodyear is defined by its rapid expansion into master-planned communities, with Estrella being the largest at 20,000 acres. The city features diverse neighborhoods such as Palm Valley and PebbleCreek, catering to various demographics including active adults. Notable landmarks include the Goodyear Ballpark, which serves as a spring training home for Major League Baseball teams, and the Estrella Mountain Regional Park. This park covers nearly 20,000 acres of desert terrain, offering extensive trails and recreational facilities.
The city offers significant appeal through its sports venues and outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors can attend spring training games at Goodyear Ballpark or explore the natural landscapes of the Sonoran Desert within the regional park. The area also retains historical sites like the abandoned Luke Field Auxiliary #6, a former World War II airfield. These attractions, combined with the city's suburban amenities, draw residents and tourists seeking both athletic events and desert exploration.
As of the 2020 census, Goodyear had a population of 95,294, with estimates reaching 118,186 by 2024. The climate is a hot desert type, characterized by over 300 sunny days annually and extreme summer heat. Winters are mild and sunny, making them the most comfortable time for outdoor activities. The city is accessible via Interstate 10, though it lacks scheduled commercial flights, relying on the nearby Phoenix airport for air travel connections.
