Known for its mix of suburban neighbourhoods, wooded areas and historic districts, Hamden occupies a varied landscape extending from the Quinnipiac River valley toward the Metacomet Ridge and the foothills of Sleeping Giant.
The town was incorporated in 1786 and was named after English statesman John Hampden. Its proximity to New Haven, combined with its parks, trails, historic sites and varied landscapes, makes it an important part of the region while retaining its own distinct suburban and small-town character.
