Tampa is a major city situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida in the United States. It serves as the county seat of Hillsborough County and occupies the north shore of Tampa Bay, extending to the east shore of Old Tampa Bay. Geographically, it lies in West Central Florida, with Saint Petersburg located to the west across the bay and Bradenton on the southern shore. The city functions as a significant urban center within the state, acting as the largest city on Florida's West Coast.
The city's origins trace back to 1824 with the establishment of Fort Brooke by the United States after acquiring Florida from Spain. The surrounding settlement was formally incorporated in 1849 as the Village of Tampa, later reincorporated as a town in 1855. Rapid growth occurred in the mid-1880s following the arrival of Henry B. Plant's railroad and Vicente Martinez Ybor's cigar factories. Tampa Town was reincorporated into the city in 1887, evolving from an isolated frontier outpost into a prosperous modern community by the early 20th century.
Tampa is divided into five main districts fanning out from Downtown, including West Tampa, South Tampa, Historic Ybor City, East Tampa, and North Tampa. The city features six official historical districts such as Hyde Park and Seminole Heights. Notable landmarks include the Tampa Museum of Art, the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and the historic Ybor City district, which reflects Cuban and Spanish heritage. MacDill Air Force Base sits on the southern tip of South Tampa.
The cultural landscape is defined by diverse immigrant influences, particularly from Cuban, Italian, and Spanish communities that arrived in the late 1800s to work in cigar factories. Residents are known as Tampans, Tampanians, or Tampeños. The city hosts major professional sports teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lightning, and Rays. Tourism is driven by its maritime trade history, cultural heritage sites, and vibrant arts scene, supported by institutions like the University of South Florida.
Tampa had a population of 384,959 as of 2020, though the city proper recorded 403,364 in that census.
