The area was originally home to the Dakota village of Titanka Tannina before European settlement began in 1843 with Peter and Louisa Quinn. The community was named after Bloomington, Illinois, by early pioneers following the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851. Incorporated as a town on May 11, 1858, it evolved through various governmental forms, becoming a village in 1953 before officially adopting city status via charter in 1960.
The city is defined by its post-World War II housing boom origins and extensive commercial development concentrated along the Interstate 494 corridor. It is home to the Mall of America, the largest enclosed shopping center in the United States, which features over 500 stores and an amusement park. Natural landmarks include Hyland Lake Park Reserve in the west and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in the southeast.
Bloomington offers significant cultural and recreational appeal through its extensive park system, providing over 1,000 square feet of parkland per capita. The city hosts major sports history at Metropolitan Stadium and educational institutions like Normandale Community College. Visitors are drawn to the diverse retail experiences at the Mall of America and the natural beauty of the surrounding river valleys and wildlife refuges.
The population was 89,987 at the 2020 census, making it Minnesota's fourth-largest city. The economy is robust, with more jobs per capita than Minneapolis or Saint Paul, supported by headquarters for companies like Dayforce, Toro, and Dairy Queen. Transportation access is facilitated by four major freeways, including Interstate 35W and U.S. Highway 169, ensuring connectivity throughout the metropolitan area.
