Fort Myers Beach is a town situated on the north end of Estero Island in Lee County, Florida, United States. It lies along the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is accessed from the mainland via a bridge spanning Estero Bay, positioning it as a distinct barrier island settlement within the broader Southwest Florida region.
The area was first inhabited by Calusa Indians approximately 2,000 years ago before Cuban fishermen established a village known as Ranchero in the late 1700s. American settlement began after the Homestead Act of 1862, with William Case developing the first subdivision and cottage rental industry in 1911. The island was originally named Crescent Beach until it was officially incorporated as Fort Myers Beach on December 31, 1995.
The town features a mix of residential areas and tourism infrastructure shaped by its development history. Notable sites include the Mound House archaeological site, Newton Beach Park, and the historic Seven Seas Cottage. The landscape includes canals constructed in the 1920s and various parks such as Bay Oaks Park and Bayside Veterans Park, which offer recreational facilities and harbor views.
Cultural attractions highlight the local shrimping heritage and artistic community through events like the Lions Club Shrimp Festival and the American Sand Sculpting Championship. Visitors enjoy the Taste of the Beach food festival and the Pirate Festival, which features themed performances and ship battles. The area also hosts the Christmas Boat Parade and the Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet at Saint Raphael's Episcopal Church.
The population was 5,582 as of the 2020 census, reflecting a significant decline from previous decades. The economy relies on tourism and year-round residents, supported by LeeTran bus services. Fort Myers Beach experiences a tropical climate with 56 inches of annual rain and 265 sunny days, though it faces hurricane risks, notably from Hurricane Ian in 2022 which caused extensive damage.
