Queens Theatre is an American professional theatre located in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park within Queens, New York City, United States. Situated next to the Unisphere, this cultural venue occupies a significant portion of the borough known for its vast ethnic diversity and two major airports, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International. The theatre serves as a central hub for performing arts in a region that includes distinct neighborhoods like Jackson Heights, which features large Indian, Colombian, and Mexican enclaves offering authentic cuisine and festivals.
Adapted from the Theaterama at the 1964 New York World's Fair, the structure was part of Philip Johnson's $6 million construction project designed with Richard Foster. Originally featuring artwork by Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, it operated as a circular cinema before becoming the Queens Playhouse in 1972, founded by Joseph S. Kutrzeba. A $4 million conversion in 1993 transformed it into a community theater, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 as part of the New York State Pavilion.
The building is defined by its unique architectural history, including a transparent circular pavilion added in 2009 that appears to hover at twilight. The interior features a 476-seat main stage and a 100-seat flexible studio theater, with acoustics improved and noise from LaGuardia Airport abated by a strengthened dome and second roof. The exterior has been featured in popular culture, serving as the setting for scenes in the musical film The Wiz and the science-fiction action comedy Men in Black.
The venue hosts cabaret, concerts, Broadway revivals, and film festivals, aiming to meet the interests of Queens' diverse population. It has hosted events such as the Independent Film Showcase and a Latin American festival to reach Latino communities. The theater also serves as a venue for drama, dance, music, and children’s events, with operators listed as a nonprofit since 1997 and funding provided in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
