Auburn is a city located in Lee County, Alabama, within the United States. It serves as the largest city in eastern Alabama and functions as a principal city of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. Geographically, Auburn sits on the Fall Line at the juncture of the Piedmont plateau and the coastal plain, with portions including the southernmost exposure of rocks from the Appalachian orogeny. The city is bordered by Opelika to the northeast and Chambers County to the north, stretching south to the Macon County line.

The land was opened to settlement in 1832 following the Treaty of Cusseta, with the first settlers arriving in 1836 from Harris County, Georgia. Led by Judge John J. Harper, these pioneers established a religious and educational center, leading to Auburn's incorporation on February 2, 1839. The city's development was significantly shaped by the chartering of East Alabama Male College in 1856, which later became Auburn University. After the Civil War, the institution was renamed Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College, driving the city's growth through education and agricultural research.

Auburn is a historic college town defined by its academic heritage and diverse topography ranging from rolling plains to rugged hills. The presence of Auburn University, the highest academically ranked university in the state, anchors the city's identity. The area features varied geology, including the last foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Chewacla State Park. Urban expansion occurred through annexations that increased the city's size to nearly 24 square miles, while infrastructure like Interstate 85 connected it to major state cities.

The city is known for its strong ties to Auburn University, which draws visitors through football games and tourism. Its unofficial nickname, "The Loveliest Village on the Plains," reflects its historic charm derived from Oliver Goldsmith's poem. The community benefits from a highly ranked public school system that has attracted thousands of new residents. Economic vitality is supported by industrial jobs and the university, creating a vibrant environment that balances academic tradition with modern residential growth.

Auburn had a population of 76,143 as of the 2020 census, representing significant growth from previous decades. The economy has expanded rapidly, driven by industry and the university, with industrial jobs increasing nearly 1,200% over twenty years starting in 1980. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers, receiving an average of 52.6 inches of rainfall annually. This climate supports the region's diverse ecosystems while influencing local infrastructure and lifestyle patterns.
