Wilson is a city in and the county seat of Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. It serves as an anchor city within the Rocky Mount-Wilson-Roanoke Rapids Combined Statistical Area. Located approximately 40 miles east of the state capital, Raleigh, the municipality sits at the intersection of Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 264. This strategic position makes it a significant regional hub in eastern North Carolina.
The community originated around Toisnot Primitive Baptist Church, built in the early 1800s, and was initially known as Toisnot. Growth accelerated after the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad reached the area in 1839. The North Carolina General Assembly chartered the Town of Wilson in 1836, naming it for Colonel Louis D. Wilson, who died during the Mexican–American War. Numerous historic districts and buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city features a diverse collection of historic homes along tree-lined streets, with some claiming to possess North Carolina's finest collection of bungalows. Notable landmarks include the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, an Outsider Art installation featuring large kinetic sculptures made from salvaged metal. The park opened in late 2017 and displays works by the nationally recognized artist Simpson.
Wilson offers a growing arts scene and is home to the Theater of the American South. Visitors can explore the Whirligig Museum or watch the Wilson Warbirds, a Single-A Minor League Baseball team relocating to the city for its inaugural season in April 2026. The culinary landscape includes Parkers BBQ, a well-known establishment on the North Carolina barbecue scene.
As of the 2020 census, Wilson had a population of 47,851. The economy is diverse, anchored by Truist Financial, Bridgestone Americas, and various pharmaceutical and manufacturing firms. The city is served by Amtrak trains and the Wilson Industrial Air Center for private aviation. It lies roughly 60 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and maintains a fiber-optic internet network.
