Oudenaarde is a city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders, Belgium. Situated approximately thirty kilometers south of Ghent, it serves as a convenient hub for cycling tourists within the center of the Flemish Ardennes. The municipality comprises the main city proper along with several surrounding towns including Bevere, Edelare, Eine, Ename, Heurne, Leupegem, Mater, Melden, Mullem, Nederename, Volkegem, Welden, and a part of Ooike.
The history of the current municipality begins in 974 when Otto II built fortifications at Ename to protect against Francia. Ename grew rapidly, becoming the largest town in the Duchy of Lotharingia by 1005 before being destroyed in 1034. Oudenaarde later flourished as a residence for nobles and a staunch supporter of the counts of Flanders. Its tapestry industry reached its peak in the sixteenth century, and the town hall was built between 1526 and 1537.
The city is defined by its flamboyant Gothic architecture, most notably the Town Hall and Belfry designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Other significant landmarks include the Church of Our Lady of Pamele, begun in 1234, and the Church of St Walburga near the market square. The area also features the Beguinage with buildings dating to 1500 and the Provincial Archeological Museum at Ename, preserving the region's deep historical roots.
Cultural appeal centers on Oud bruin beer, a style known for its long aging process, and the Tour of Flanders cycling race which finishes in the town.
