FR- Bastia, Corsica
Bastia is a commune located in the department of Haute-Corse on the island of Corsica, France. Situated in the northeast of the island at the base of Cap Corse, it serves as the capital of both the Bagnaja region and the department. The city functions as the principal port and commercial hub for Corsica, distinguishing itself as a key administrative and economic center within the French territory.
The site was originally occupied by the Vanacimi people during Roman times, though the city itself did not exist then. In the 1300s, Genoese governors built a fortress known as a bastiglia to maintain sea communications, giving the city its name. It became the principal capital of Genoese Corsica before becoming French in the late 1760s. The area was historically part of the pieve of Orto and later developed under Genoese administration.
The city is divided into districts such as Terranova and Terravecchia, with the latter being an open area that was largely ruined by war. Bastia features a solid wall, wide moat, and magnificent bastions constructed by the Bank of Saint George and the Genoese government. A citadel was also added, though its cost exceeded its benefits. The urban layout includes fairly wide streets in the flat Terranova area and steep lower slopes in other parts.
Bastia is known for its wines and offers pleasant harbour-side areas suitable for strolling. The city has been awarded three flowers by the National Council of Towns and Villages in Bloom. Its inhabitants, known as Bastiais or Bastiaises, observe a serious afternoon siesta, requiring visitors to respect shop hours for necessities. The city retains a pedestrian-friendly character with small fortifications and historic architecture.
The population was 46,867 as of 2023, making it the second-highest in Corsica after Ajaccio. Tourism has not brought significant prosperity, and unemployment remains high by French standards. Access is available via Bastia Airport, located 20 km south, or by ferry from France and Italy. A narrow gauge train links the city to other Corsican towns, though fares are pricey and comfort levels are limited.
