- Bourg St Maurice
Bourg-Saint-Maurice is a commune situated in the Savoie department within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France. Located on the Italian border south of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, it serves as the last town along the Tarentaise Valley in the heart of the French Alps. The settlement lies at the foot of the Les Arcs skiing area and near the Aiguille Rouge summit, positioning it as a key transport hub for the Paradiski ski region.
Historically, the site corresponds to Bergintrum, a location on the Gallic side of the Alpes Graiae pass marked in the Antonine Itinerary between Milan and Vienne. Modern scholarship confirms this identification despite earlier discrepancies noted by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. During the French Revolution, the town was briefly renamed Nargue-Sarde between 1794 and 1815 before reverting to its original name.
The town features the Catholic church of St Maurice on Grande Rue and the Protestant church on Avenue Maréchal Leclerc. Nearby in Le Chatelard stands Ouvrage Chatelard, a lesser work of the Maginot Line's Alpine extension begun in 1938. The Arc en Ciel funicular railway links the town to the Arc 1600 ski area, while the whitewater course in the town center serves as a training ground for European national teams.
Bourg-Saint-Maurice attracts visitors for its renowned Les Arcs skiing area, which offers 420 km of pistes between altitudes of 810 and 3,800 meters. Summer activities include hiking toward Mount Blanc and white water sports, having hosted the ICF White Water Championships in 1969, 1987, and 2002. The town provides varied accommodation, a cinema, two swimming pools, and shopping outlets for tourists.
The population was recorded as 7,270 in 2023. The local economy relies heavily on providing accommodation and transport services for the ski area. Direct rail travel connects to London, Brussels, and Amsterdam during winter via TGV services. The climate is characterized by long, cold winters with below-freezing temperatures and warm, stormy summers, situated on the boundary between humid continental and oceanic zones.
