Treviso is a city and comune located in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It serves as the capital of the province bearing its name and sits at the confluence of the Botteniga and Sile rivers. Geographically, it is positioned approximately 30 kilometres north of Venice, 50 km east of Vicenza, and 40 km north-east of Padua on the plain between the Gulf of Venice and the Alps.

The city's origins are linked to the Veneti people, becoming a Roman municipium in 89 BC. It later fell under Byzantine and Lombard rule before joining the Republic of Venice in 1329, which brought significant fortification and cultural growth. Treviso gained independence after the Peace of Constance in 1183 but faced various dominations, including French and Austrian control, before annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

The historic center is defined by its Venetian walls and numerous waterways that were historically exploited for mills and navigation. Notable landmarks include the Late Romanesque–Early Gothic Church of San Francesco, built between 1231 and 1270, which houses frescoes and the tombs of Pietro Alighieri and Francesca Petrarca. The city also features the Palazzo dei Trecento and a fish market on an island connected by two small bridges.

Treviso is renowned as the original production area for Prosecco wine and radicchio, and is thought to be the origin of tiramisù. The province hosts headquarters for major clothing retailers like Benetton and Sisley, as well as appliance maker De'Longhi and bicycle manufacturer Pinarello. These industries contribute significantly to the local economy alongside tourism drawn by its architectural heritage and proximity to the Venetian Lagoon.

The municipality has a population of 84,607 as of 2023. The city is accessible via Treviso Airport, which serves budget flights, and is connected to Venice by train and the Terraglio road. Treviso experiences a temperate humid subtropical climate with mild differences between highs and lows and adequate rainfall year-round, making it suitable for exploration throughout the seasons.
