Swakopmund is a coastal city in western Namibia, situated at the edge of the Namib Desert. It serves as the capital of the Erongo administrative district. The town lies on the Atlantic coast, characterized by its position between the ocean and the desert landscape.
Founded in 1892 by Captain Curt von François, Swakopmund was established as the main harbour for German South West Africa. It quickly became a major port for imports and exports before harbour activities ceased during World War I. The town later transitioned into a holiday resort for the white population of the territory.
The city is known for its 19th-century German colonial architecture, which contrasts with the surrounding desert environment. Notable landmarks include the Altes Gefängnis prison, the Woermannhaus public library, and the Swakopmund Museum. The area also features the Rossmund Desert Golf Course, one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world.
Swakopmund attracts visitors with activities such as quad biking, skydiving, and camel rides in the sand dunes near Langstrand. The town offers a mix of German heritage and African flair, with attractions like the National Marine Aquarium and the Crystal Gallery. It has also been used as a filming location for productions like The Prisoner.
The city has a population of 75,921 as of 2023. It is served by Swakopmund Airport and lies on the B2 road, 352 km west of Windhoek. Swakopmund experiences a mild desert climate with thick fog and low rainfall, making it suitable for tourism year-round despite the cool temperatures.
