Landgraaf, Limburg, Netherlands
NL- Lankgraaf
Landgraaf is a municipality situated in the southeastern province of Limburg within the Netherlands. It forms an integral part of the Parkstad Limburg agglomeration, working administratively with neighboring municipalities such as Heerlen, Kerkrade, and Simpelveld. This collaboration defines the region known as Parkstad Limburg, which encompasses the broader urban area in which Landgraaf is embedded.
The town's development was significantly shaped by the Eastern Mining Area during the first half of the twentieth century. Two large coal mines were established in Schaesberg, which was then an individual town before becoming a neighborhood of Landgraaf. This industrial history contributed to the area's growth and subsequent administrative integration into the modern municipal structure.
The municipality comprises several population centers including Nieuwenhagen, Schaesberg, and Ubach over Worms. It is home to notable landmarks such as SnowWorld, which features the largest indoor ski piste in Europe, and Mondo Verde, a theme park with world gardens and replicas of global monuments. The area also includes the heritage line Miljoenenlijn, which passes through the town.
Landgraaf is famous for hosting Pinkpop, an annual pop music festival held on the Pentecost weekend in Schaesberg. The event attracts national and international artists and is described as one of the longest-running pop festivals in the world. Additionally, the town offers cultural attractions including the SnowWorld Outdoor Fun Park and various sports facilities that draw visitors throughout the year.
The population of Landgraaf was recorded at 37,262 as of 2021. Access to the town is facilitated by the provincial N299 road and a train station served by Arriva and Deutsche Bahn regional trains. The infrastructure supports both local commuting and tourism, with connections extending to nearby cities in the Netherlands and Germany, making it accessible for visitors seeking its diverse attractions.
