Holwert is a village located in the Noardeast-Fryslân municipality within the northern Netherlands province of Friesland. Situated on the coast of the Wadden Sea, it serves as a significant coastal settlement in this region. The village functions as a key departure point for maritime transport to nearby islands, anchoring its role in local connectivity and regional geography.
The settlement originated as a terp village several centuries before Christ, developing in a radial shape around an original mound designated for the church. A second terp was created in the eighth or ninth century for trade and housing. Although a dike was constructed along the coast in the eleventh or twelfth century, Holwert remained outside its protection until 1580, shaping its early defensive and residential history.
Architectural heritage includes the tower of the Dutch Reformed church, dating to the thirteenth century with a spire likely added in 1661. The current L-shaped church replaced an older structure demolished in 1776. Two windmills, De Hoop and Miedenmolen, stand as notable landmarks. The village also retains remnants of a dam built in 1872 to facilitate walking to Ameland.
Holwert is a primary starting point for wadlopen, or mudflat hiking, allowing access to the island of Ameland at low tide under licensed guide supervision. The Wadloopcentrum Fryslân operates here, training guides and preserving this unique sport. The ferry service departing from the end of the remaining dam further defines its cultural appeal as a gateway for coastal exploration.
The village had a population of around 1,607 in January 2017. Historically, it hosted a railway station on the North Friesland Railway that operated from 1901 until passenger services ceased in 1940. Today, transport relies heavily on the ferry connection to Ameland. The official name was changed from Holwerd to Holwert in 2023.
